The Company:
Nifty corporation (www.nifty.co.jp/english/info.htm) is one of the most famous telecom companies in Japan, with a core business of providing Internet service to more than 1.7 million broadband users.
Nifty also provides the security service Jouji-Anzen (Ever-Safe) Security 24 in order to protect subscribers’ computers running Microsoft Windows. The Challenge:
Nifty initially launched the “Jouji-Anzen Security 24” security service on November 1st, 2004. To improve the quality of this service, Nifty determined that there was a need to look for a better security solution.
The Solution:
Nifty ultimately made its choice in favor of Kaspersky Lab, and on February 1st 2007 Nifty signed an OEM agreement with Kaspersky Labs Japan. A team of 5 engineers was involved in developing the “Security 24 assistant tool” using KAV SDK for Windows provided by Kaspersky Lab. The entire project, including study and research, took six months to complete.
The service was implemented using subscription-based client-server software. The service constantly gains new subscribers, and is becoming quite popular among many users in Japan. (At present, the number of security service users has increased to more than 220 thousand subscribers.) The service price is 420 yen (about USD 3.70) per user/month.
Nifty's adaption of the Kaspersky anti-virus engine has strengthened the existing “Jouji-Anzen Security 24” solution with Kaspersky Lab’s best-of-breed technology.
Interview:
We provide the security service “Jouji-Anzen Security 24” to Internet users in Japan. The original idea was connecting end users’ computers to our data center via VPN so that when a user accesses the Internet his/her traffic is completely redirected through the data center. The virus scan system and firewall located at the data center protected client PCs from unauthorized access, viruses, etc. However, from customer feedback we learned that such an approach is not enough since it cannot protect users’ PC’s from security threats coming from encrypted connections, CD-ROMs, USB memory or other media that might be infected with malware. We were able to respond to customers’ demands by introducing Kaspersky Lab’s technology, which is known for its high virus detection rate, low rate of false positives and prompt response to newly-emerging security threats. I am very satisfied with the quality of Kaspersky products delivered by excellent technical experts, and I am glad to recommend the service to our users with confidence.

Conclusion:
 "@nifty Virus Check Service" |
On November 2007, Nifty announced the security service to Japan’s Internet community. (The service price for non-Nifty users is 525 yen (USD 4.70) per user/month.) In addition to “Security 24”, Nifty has adapted the Kaspersky Online Scanner solution by implementing the “@nifty Virus Check Service”, available for free, to attract more users and lead them to subscribing to the fully-functional service. Adapting the different solutions has caused Nifty to appreciate the different aspects and flexibility in the solutions offered by Kaspersky Lab, which are optimal for a company’s business needs.
Both companies see their common missions in improving security knowledge among Internet users. Offering antivirus tools as an internet service seems to be a good way to approach that goal.
